Department of Food Science

The Department of Food Science was established in the academic year 2001–2002. It is dedicated to the study of food science and the modern technologies used in food processing, preservation, and food safety.

The department’s goals include preparing graduates specialized in this field to supply society with qualified scientific personnel to serve in food industries, as well as providing scientific consultations and expertise to various food factories. The department also organizes scientific conferences, symposia, training courses, and promotes health and nutritional awareness based on sound and modern scientific foundations.

The department offers a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science for undergraduate students, and Master’s and Doctoral degrees for postgraduate students.

The department houses several laboratories, including:

  • Microbiology Research Laboratory

  • Dairy Laboratory

  • Food Processing Laboratory

  • Cereals Laboratory

  • Chemistry Laboratory

  • Quality Control Laboratory (affiliated with the Dairy Plant)

In addition, it contains a bakery, a dairy plant, and a food processing plant. Recently, a Consumer Protection Unit was also established.

Degrees Awarded by the Department

The Department of Food Science grants a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Sciences / Food Science for undergraduate studies, as well as Master’s, Doctoral, and Higher Diploma degrees in Agricultural Sciences / Food Science for postgraduate studies.

Vision

  • Developing the department through the improvement of infrastructure and the introduction of modern and advanced technologies and equipment in food processing.

  • Promoting joint cooperation with the Salahuddin Health Directorate by activating the Consumer Protection Unit to ensure food safety, quality control, and compliance with the Iraqi standard specifications.

  • Establishing a center for fitness, obesity prevention, and healthy nutrition in collaboration with the College of Physical Education.

  • Rehabilitating the Food Industries Laboratory to provide students with greater practical and technical expertise.

  • Striving for the department to become an internationally recognized center for education, research, and consultancy, and a leader in the fields of Food Science and Human Nutrition in Iraq and the Arab region. The department aspires to achieve excellence in education, scientific research, and community service in the field of food industries across both public and private sectors.
